The
“Casa do Fundo” is a mystery to be discovered by those who like Country
Tourism. Situated in Pereiro at 8 km distance from Seia, it is an ideal place to
relax before having a good excursion into the Serra da Estrela.

Built
all in granite towards the end of the 19th century, it represents the solid
sturdy architecture of a family home of wealthy farmers. Around the house you
feel already the calmness and tranquillity by looking at the green spaces at
your feet. Passing the gate, you will notice the old heavy wine press and a
little further down the ruins of the baker’s oven.

House and yard are of this kind of places
transmitting the power of nature and granite rock. The legend tells that at the
end of the 19th century it has been used by João Brandão – the terror of the
Beira-region- as a refuge
when invading the areas of the
“faldas da Serra”. Also has served as an overnight stop for hawkers and
merchants of olive oil and pottery on their way to the famous market of Boavista

Observing
the house with attention, you will notice the effort of the architect António
Catarino to whom the restauring work has been entrusted, to conserve the
original feature of the architecture. The interiors have been adapted to modern
comfort by the owner, Maria Sílvia
Mamede, with great skill, so that guests from the big cities can refuge
themselves without feeling in a hotel.

The “Casa do Fundo” is composed by
three floors where guests can enjoy absolute comfort. At the ground level –
meant place for animals and
tools in former times - the social
area has been installed, taking advantage of old objects connected with farming
labour for decoration, curiosities that taking us into the past. There is the
spaceful attractive living-hall with bar and dominating fireplace, inviting all
together for good conversation sessions in the evening hours.

The
kitchen has been maintained, but equipped for modern life. Annexed to it, in the
dining room, D.Sílvia has the fireplace lightened at combined time and set the
breakfast table.
There are laid out the delights of the countryside in appetising jars and
baskets.
